What do sport and diplomacy have in common? Both depend on communication, strategy, mutual respect, and the ability to build connections across different backgrounds.
Those shared values were at the heart of the second edition of the Ambassadors' Schiller Cup, held on Sunday, October 25, at Club de Tenis Chamartín. The event brought together Schiller International University students and members of the diplomatic community for a morning of padel designed not only around friendly competition, but also around conversation, networking, and international exchange.
Co-organized by Schiller International University, Academia de la Diplomacia, and Club de Tenis Chamartín, the second edition welcomed 36 players, as well as spectators who came to support their peers and enjoy the sunny morning.
The diversity represented on the courts reflected the international nature of the event. Schiller students taking part represented 25 different nationalities, while participating ambassadors and diplomats represented Slovakia, Moldova, Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Georgia, Cabo Verde, North Macedonia, New Zealand, and Spain.

Where Sport and Diplomacy Meet
At first glance, a padel tournament and diplomacy may appear to belong to very different worlds. On the court, however, many of the same skills come into play.
Communication between partners, understanding the other side, adapting strategy, showing respect, and working towards a common objective are all fundamental elements of sport. They are also important in building relationships across countries, cultures, and institutions.
The Ambassadors' Schiller Cup brings those two worlds together, using sport to create a relaxed environment in which students can interact directly with ambassadors and members of the diplomatic community.
This idea is particularly relevant within Schiller’s international community. With students from 25 different nationalities participating in this year’s tournament, the courts became a meeting point for people with a wide range of cultural and international perspectives.
Creating Networking Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
While competition is part of the fun, the purpose of the Ambassadors' Schiller Cup goes beyond determining the winners of the tournament.
One of the central objectives of the event is to provide students with a different kind of networking opportunity, allowing them to meet members of the diplomatic community outside a formal conference, lecture, or professional event.
The tournament offered a natural starting point for conversations. Rather than beginning with job titles or formal introductions, participants could first meet as teammates, opponents, and fellow players before continuing those conversations away from the court.
Celebrating with Trophies That Carry a Wider Purpose
Once the matches came to an end, participants gathered for the trophy ceremony, with this year’s awards carrying an additional social dimension.
The trophies awarded during the tournament also reflected a tradition Schiller has maintained across its sports competitions in recent year. They were produced in collaboration with Ayúdame3D, connecting a celebration of sporting achievement with an organization that uses 3D-printing technology to create assistive solutions and generate social impact.
Continuing the Conversation Beyond the Court
The trophy ceremony was followed by an aperitivo for players and attendees, allowing students, diplomats, guests, and spectators to continue conversations and make new connections in an informal setting.
This combination of sport and networking is central to the Ambassadors' Schiller Cup. The objective is not simply to bring students and diplomats into the same space, but to create the circumstances for them to interact naturally.
The event was made possible through the collaboration between Schiller International University, Academia de la Diplomacia, and Club de Tenis Chamartín. Schiller’s connection with Academia de la Diplomacia has been facilitated by Schiller alumnus Santiago Velo, whose involvement has helped bring the university and diplomatic communities together through the initiative.
Schiller International University would like to thank Academia de la Diplomacia and Club de Tenis Chamartín for co-organizing the event and helping make the second Ambassadors' Schiller Cup possible, as well as all the players and attendees who contributed to the morning.
This second edition of the tournament demonstrated how a shared interest in sport can open the door to something much bigger: conversation, connections, and international exchange.
