A collaboration that connects academic flexibility with real-world experience in global tennis
Schiller International University has launched a new sports partnership with the Federación de Tenis de Madrid (FTM), strengthening our commitment to developing student-athlete programs in Europe through a model that combines academic flexibility, industry exposure, and hands-on experience in world-class sporting events.
This Federación de Tenis de Madrid collaboration goes beyond a traditional academic agreement. It creates a structured pathway that balances studies and sports at university with hands-on exposure to sports event operations, positioning students for careers in a rapidly growing global industry.Supporting student-athletes from the classroom to competition
At its core, this tennis and education partnership in Madrid is designed to support federated tennis players in pursuing higher education without compromising their athletic careers. Through flexible academic pathways, Schiller student-athletes can adapt their studies to training and competition schedules, ensuring continuity in both areas.
This allows students to develop not only academically, but personally and professionally, building discipline, resilience, and a global mindset that extends beyond the court. It also provides opportunities for the broader Schiller community, giving current students access to the visibility, network, and impact of major tennis events in Madrid.
Internships in the industry: learning at the Grand Prix Madrid
Schiller’s partnership with FTM was brought to life during the Grand Prix Madrid, where three Schiller students from the Madrid campus—Larissa, Lucía, and Pilar—participated in sports management internships. Working directly within tournament operations, the contributed to:- Communication and media strategies
- Event coordination and logistics
- Sponsor visibility and on-site execution
These tennis tournament internships provided a clear example of experiential learning in sports management, allowing students to move from theory to real-world application in a high-performance environment.
“[it was] an unforgettable week that exceeded expectations, highlighting how working under pressure and adapting quickly became essential to capturing the essence of an elite event.” - Larissa, BS in International Business
Students were immersed in the reality of managing a global sporting event. From documenting sponsor visibility to engaging with players and audiences, they gained a comprehensive understanding of how different elements come together to deliver a seamless experience. It offered a direct connection between their academic environment and the professional world.
“[Witnessing how Schiller and the FTM] walk hand in hand throughout the tournament made the experience even more meaningful.” - Lucia, BS in International Business
The experience also fostered a strong sense of belonging and professional growth. They were trusted with real responsibilities from day one, which accelerated both their confidence and their ability to contribute. Managing multiple tasks simultaneously, supporting press operations, and navigating high-pressure situations required not only technical knowledge but also empathy, communication, and adaptability.
“[I felt] treated as an equal within the team.” - Pilar, BA in International Relations and Diplomacy
