Schiller Students Explore Sustainability, Culture, and Community Through International Trips Skip to main content Skip to footer

Students from across Schiller International University recently had the opportunity to step beyond the classroom through two memorable excursions that combined learning, cultural exploration, and community-building. From an educational visit to Germany’s Black Forest by the Heidelberg campus to a student-led trip to Athens organized by the Paris campus Student Council, both experiences highlighted the value of experiential learning and international engagement.

Key Takeaways

  • Heidelberg students explored sustainability, biodiversity, and regional culture through a hands-on learning experience in the Black Forest.
  • Paris students traveled to Athens on a trip organized by the Student Council, strengthening community and international connections.
  • Both experiences showcased the importance of learning beyond the classroom through cultural exploration and student engagement.

Heidelberg Students Explore Sustainability in the Black Forest

Students from the Schiller Heidelberg campus recently participated in an educational excursion to the Black Forest alongside Professor Hieke. The trip brought together students from Economics and Resources and Environment courses, as well as other members of the campus community, for a day focused on sustainability, environmental awareness, and regional culture.

The visit began at the Nationalpark Zentrum Ruhestein, where students explored interactive exhibits focused on the Black Forest ecosystem. Through hands-on displays, participants learned about the interconnected relationships between wildlife, vegetation, fungi, and environmental conservation.

One of the most engaging aspects of the visit was the opportunity to observe educational wildlife exhibits that helped bring discussions about biodiversity and ecosystem management to life.

The group later continued to Mummelsee, one of the region’s most famous natural landmarks. There, students enjoyed lunch together, sampled traditional Black Forest cake, and explored local products and crafts while learning more about the area's cultural heritage.

The excursion provided a valuable opportunity to connect classroom concepts with real-world environmental contexts while encouraging interaction and collaboration outside the traditional academic environment.

Paris Student Council Organizes a Memorable Trip to Athens

Schiller Heidelberg, Paris, and Madrid StudentsStudents from the Schiller Paris campus also recently enjoyed an international experience through a trip to Athens, organized by the Paris Student Council.

While student trips often focus on the destination itself, experiences like these also highlight the important role student leaders play in building campus community. Organizing an international trip requires extensive coordination, planning, communication, and attention to detail, all of which contribute to creating a positive experience for participants.

The Student Council worked to create an itinerary that balanced exploration, social activities, and opportunities for students to connect outside the classroom. Their efforts helped transform the trip into more than just a weekend away—it became a chance for students to strengthen friendships, meet classmates from different programs, and create shared memories in a new cultural setting.

The trip demonstrated how student-led initiatives can create meaningful opportunities for engagement, helping students build connections that extend beyond academic life.

Madrid Students Explore History and Popular Culture at the Wax Museum

Additional, Students from the Schiller Madrid campus also recently took part in a cultural outing to the Wax Museum of Madrid, one of the city's most distinctive attractions.

The visit offered students the opportunity to explore exhibits featuring Spanish historical figures, internationally recognized celebrities, athletes, cultural icons, and characters from film and popular culture. The outing provided students with a different perspective on cultural history while creating opportunities for discussion and shared experiences outside the classroom.

Learning Beyond the Classroom Across Campuses

Whether exploring environmental sustainability in the Black Forest or discovering a new city alongside classmates in Athens, students were able to engage with new perspectives, strengthen community ties, and expand their understanding of the world beyond campus.

These experiences reflect Schiller’s commitment to experiential learning, cultural exploration, and creating opportunities for students to develop personally, academically, and globally.
