At our Heidelberg campus, community engagement often begins with simple ideas that can make a meaningful difference in people's lives. This summer, students took part in the annual Heart Pillow Social Project, a collaborative initiative with the Heidelberg International Women's Club that combined creativity, community building, and support for breast cancer patients. The project continued with a visit to the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, where students delivered the pillows they had handcrafted and learned more about the institution's work in cancer research and patient care.
Key Takeaways
- Supporting Breast Cancer Patients: Schiller Heidelberg students handcrafted heart-shaped pillows to provide comfort and support to breast cancer patients.
- Community Collaboration: The initiative was organized in collaboration with the Heidelberg International Women's Club, strengthening community partnerships.
- Visit to NCT Heidelberg: On October 13, 2026, students delivered the handmade pillows to the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg and learned about its work in cancer research and patient care.
- Learning Beyond the Classroom: The project connected practical community service with insights into cancer research, innovative therapies, and patient wellbeing.
- Commitment to Gender Equality: The initiative aligned with Schiller's 2026 focus on UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and will continue with another session planned for November.
Creating Heart Pillows for Breast Cancer Patients
On June 17, undergraduate and graduate students gathered on our Heidelberg campus for the annual Heart Pillow Social Project. Working together, they handcrafted heart-shaped pillows intended to bring comfort to breast cancer patients.
The initiative offered students an opportunity to connect outside the classroom while contributing to a project with a clear purpose. Through this hands-on activity, they could see how a collective effort, even one involving a simple craft, can become a gesture of care and solidarity for people facing health challenges.
As part of our 2026 focus with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality, this activity was organized in collaboration with the Heidelberg International Women's Club, the project also reflects a shared commitment to supporting the local community.
However, making the pillows was only the first part of the experience. To complete the project, students also had the opportunity to deliver their creations in person and learn more about the people and institutions working to support cancer patients.
Visiting NCT Heidelberg: From Community Service to Scientific Discovery
Following the summer crafting session, students visited the National Center for Tumor Diseases Heidelberg to deliver the handmade heart pillows on October 13. The donation extended the initiative beyond campus, turning the students' work into a tangible gesture of comfort and support for breast cancer patients.
The visit also provided an opportunity to discover the important role NCT Heidelberg plays in advancing cancer research, treatment, and patient care. Students gained insight into how researchers, physicians, and healthcare professionals collaborate to investigate new approaches, develop innovative therapies, and improve outcomes for patients in Germany and beyond.
Learning about this work helped students understand the connections between scientific research and patient wellbeing. Behind advances in cancer treatment are teams of specialists whose combined expertise contributes to improving diagnosis, treatment options, and quality of care. Seeing the work of a leading research institution firsthand offered a valuable perspective on how scientific progress can translate into real-world benefits for individuals and communities.
The experience brought together two complementary forms of learning: contributing to a community initiative and discovering how research institutions address complex health challenges.
Building Community Through Meaningful Experiences
The Heart Pillow Social Project demonstrates how student engagement can extend beyond the university campus. By participating in the crafting session and subsequent visit, students were able to contribute to a local initiative while gaining a deeper understanding of the wider context surrounding their efforts.
The project also created opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to collaborate, connect with one another, and work toward a shared goal. These experiences reinforce the importance of community partnerships and show how meaningful contributions do not always require large-scale actions. Sometimes, they begin with a few hours spent making something by hand and continue with the opportunity to deliver it to those who may benefit from it.
We would like to thank the Heidelberg International Women's Club for its continued collaboration and the NCT Heidelberg team for welcoming our students and sharing insights into their work. We look forward to the next Heart Pillow Social Project session in November, when our campus community will come together again to continue this initiative of care, connection, and support.
