Beyond the City: A Taste of Spanish Culture
Our Madrid Campus’ annual Vineyard Visit returned this Wednesday, bringing together 60 students, staff, and faculty for a day in the countryside. While studying in Madrid gives students the opportunity to experience life in a vibrant European capital, activities like this offer a different perspective on the country, taking them beyond the city to explore a new culture, traditions, and gastronomy.
Wine has long played an important role in Spain’s cultural identity and economy, and visiting a local winery gives students the chance to discover this part of the country firsthand.
Just as importantly, the Vineyard Visit is about bringing our community together. With students from different programs, backgrounds, and stages of their academic journey, the activity creates an opportunity to meet people they might not otherwise encounter in their daily campus life. For incoming students in particular, it is a great way to get to know returning students and build friendships and get a taste of what student life can be at Schiller.
Key Takeaways:
- Annual Campus Tradition: Schiller’s Madrid Campus Vineyard Visit brought together 60 students, faculty, and staff for a day in the Spanish countryside.
- Spanish Cultural Experience: Students experienced Spanish wine culture and learned about the winemaking process through a guided winery tour and wine tasting.
- Teamwork and Collaboration: Competitive team-building games encouraged cooperation, friendly competition, and interaction among students.
- Building New Friendships: The visit helped incoming and returning students connect with peers, faculty, and Student Experience staff beyond the classroom.
- Strengthening Campus Community: The growing popularity of the annual Vineyard Visit reflects its role in enriching student life, fostering belonging, and creating shared memories at Schiller.
A Day of Teamwork, Learning, and Good Company
The day begins with students arriving at the vineyard, where they are divided into groups to take part in a series of competitive team-building games. The activities encourage students to work together, get to know one another, and enjoy a little friendly competition. It is an easy way to break the ice, especially for those who are still getting to know their classmates.
After the games, students take part in a wine tasting and a guided tour of the winery’s facilities. During the visit, they learn about the different stages of the winemaking process, gaining insight into an industry closely connected to Spain’s economy and cultural heritage. The combination of tasting and learning allows students to experience this tradition beyond what they might discover in a classroom.
The group then comes together for lunch, followed by some free time to relax, chat, and enjoy the surroundings. After a full day in the countryside, everyone heads back to campus with new experiences and, hopefully, a few new friendships.
A Campus Tradition That Keeps Growing
The Vineyard Visit has become one of the Madrid Campus’ most popular annual activities, and its popularity continues to grow with every edition. Part of what makes the activity special is the mix of people it brings together. Incoming students get to know those who have already spent time at Schiller, students make friends beyond their usual circles, and have the opportunity to interact with faculty and Student Experience staff in a more informal setting. These shared experiences help build relationships that extend beyond classes and contribute to a stronger sense of community.
And, of course, there is plenty of fun along the way. From the friendly competition during the team games to the conversations over lunch, the Vineyard Visit gives everyone a chance to unwind, enjoy Spanish culture, and create memories together.
