Now in its fifth edition, the challenge continues to push boundaries, connecting students with industry leaders and, for the first time, the public sector.

Launch of Schiller’s 5th Global Innovation ChallengeWhat is the Global Innovation Challenge?

The Global Innovation Challenge is an annual flagship project at Schiller International University that brings together students from across its global campuses—Paris, Madrid, Tampa, and Heidelberg.

Each year, the challenge is developed in collaboration with a major organization—ranging from multinational companies to public institutions—giving students the opportunity to work on live business or societal challenges. This hands-on, experiential learning model allows participants to apply their academic knowledge in a practical, high-impact environment while engaging directly with industry leaders.

Working in international, multidisciplinary teams, students develop innovative solutions, present their ideas to key stakeholders, and gain valuable exposure to global collaboration, problem-solving, and professional communication.

The Global Innovation Challenge 2026

This week marks the official launch of the 5th edition of the Global Innovation Challenge, bringing together students from across Schiller’s campuses in a dynamic and collaborative setting.

This year’s edition, titled “Connecting Students and the City: Heidelberg’s International Experience Challenge,” represents a significant milestone. For the first time, the initiative is being developed in direct collaboration with a public institution—the City of Heidelberg.

Working alongside Stefanie Jansen, Deputy Mayor of Heidelberg, students will explore themes related to civic innovation and urban development. This collaboration provides a unique opportunity to understand how public leadership shapes inclusive, forward-thinking cities.

A total of 39 students have been selected to participate, making this the largest edition to date. Divided into five teams, participants will work across campuses and disciplines from April 7 through May 11, developing innovative and practical solutions.

Throughout the program, students will:

  • Collaborate in international teams
  • Participate in global sessions designed to guide their progress
  • Receive mentorship from Elevatorfy and its expert mentors
  • Refine and present their ideas to real stakeholders

Key Dates

  • April 27 – First proposal presentations to Deputy Mayor Jansen
  • May 11 – Final presentations and winning team selection

The winning team will be awarded the opportunity to take part in an internship or shadowing experience with the Office of the Deputy Mayor of Heidelberg, further strengthening the link between academic learning and real-world application.

The Importance of the Global Innovation Challenge

The Global Innovation Challenge plays a vital role in preparing students for today’s complex and interconnected world. By working on real challenges provided by industry leaders and public institutions, students from any program can gain:

  • Practical experience in solving real-world problems
  • Cross-cultural collaboration skills through international teamwork
  • Exposure to industry and public sector leaders
  • Confidence in presenting and defending ideas

More importantly, the initiative bridges the gap between theory and practice. It allows students to move beyond the classroom and understand how innovation operates in real professional environments—whether in business or public governance.

These collaborations have consistently delivered strong results, with students presenting innovative ideas directly to company representatives and gaining valuable professional exposure. Each edition has built on the success of the last, expanding participation, strengthening partnerships, and increasing the real-world impact of student solutions.

Through initiatives like the Global Innovation Challenge, Schiller International University continues to empower students to become innovative, globally minded professionals—ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
