Can you share some of your fondest memories fro your time at Schiller International University?

My time at Schiller was well spent, so there are numerous memories that stand out. While working on the Student Council, I would say one of my fondest memories at Schiller was the Winterball at the Palais Prinz Carl, since it was the culmination of hard work with the Council and a celebration of the student body. My graduation was quite memorable as well, as I left with four awards, both to my surprise and the Director at the time.

How would you describe the spirit and culture of Schiller during your years on campus?

The spirit and culture are built upon the dynamics and diversity between students from around the world. Since the university is still quite small, it’s easy to know numerous people through your daily interactions. It definitely helped foster a sense of belongingness and open-mindedness

How do you feel about the evolution of the university and its facilities?

When you arrive at Schiller in Heidelberg, you may be surprised by the modern aesthetic of the facility. In my opinion, it’s a pretty building on the outside and the interior as well. During my time, the students there had the ambition to reopen a student café with the support of the Student Council, which led to a cozier environment.

Are there any qualities of the Schiller education that you believe continue to benefit students today?

After experiencing another university during my Masters (Erasmus University Rotterdam), I would say that the method of instruction and testing structure at Schiller is far superior. The monthly system with the focus on one course and its’ relevant tests may be challenging, but certainly rewarding. From my own perspective, it allowed for extreme focus on one subject and supported better retention of the material.

How has your education at Schiller played a role in your life since graduation?

My education with Schiller provided the foundation to furthering my education and pushing me professionally into international affairs and beyond. While I previously worked at a foundation for international cross-border tax matters in Amsterdam, having an expansive international profile has certainly helped me as a Researcher at Statista.

What do you consider to be the most valuable aspect of your Schiller experience?

The quality of courses and group sizes are definitely of great value to the students. At any other large-scale university, you likely will not encounter the personal interaction with the instructors as you would at Schiller. Many of the instructors I had, such as Professor Zamalloa, Dr. Matthew Hartman, and Dr.Macho, were known for asking the tough questions and pushing for real answers of substance. With some of my smaller classes, we were really able to get into meaningful and lively discussions, while focusing on the course material.

Is there a specific person (teacher, student, etc.) from your years at Schiller you remember in particular?

Dr. Matthew Hartman was my absolute favorite because he was a colorful and talented instructor. Not only did he have years of relevant experience in international institutions, but a uniquely sharp mind for engaging in discussions on international relations. Most of my core IR classes had been with him and it was a pleasure looking forward to his classes. He definitely shaped my years at Schiller in a very positive way!

What advice would you give to current students to help them make the most of their Schiller experience?

In the professional sense, it might be said far too often, but you really need to apply yourself to go above and beyond. With that I mean beyond your classes, you should be reading extra material, partaking in an extracurricular activity related to your field, and picking up certificates along the way. These are especially essential for those with no previous work experience. On a more personal level, be sure to have fun and make meaningful connections!
