International Student Visa Information

The process of obtaining a student visa can be complicated and time consuming. Please allow approximately 3 months for this process. Remember, a student visa is temporary and only for the purpose of studying in the country you will be attending school, after which you must return to your home country. You must bring proof of sufficient ties to your home country.

Applying for a Visa

Once you are fully admitted by the university, the P/DSO will review your financial documents. If the financial documents are complete, the P/DSO will prepare and send the I-20 to you. If more information is required in order to process your I-20, the P/DSO will contact you by email. Once everything is received by our office, your I-20 will be processed and mailed directly to you.

US Consulates and Embassies:

The US consulates generally will not issue a visa more than 90 days before the start of your program states on your I-20 (field #5). Plan accordingly.

There are two fees involved in this process. Keep in mind these are separate fees and you must pay both to apply for the visa.

The application fee for the F-1 student visa:

* You will be required to pay the visa application fee before you can schedule your appointment.

The I-901 SEVIS Fee:

To pay the I-901 SEVIS fee please visit the website http://www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/.SEVIS fee may be paid by credit card, check, or money order, or at the Western Union.

If you need to transfer a payment made on one SEVIS ID to another SEVIS ID, go to http://www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/faq7.htm

Make your appointment to obtain the visa as soon as possible. You will need to bring a valid passport, admission letter, school catalog, financial documents, current and valid I-20 and the receipt for the I-901 SEVIS Fee. If it is possible also bring receipts of tuition fees that you may have paid.

Make sure your full name (last name, first name) match on all your documentation and that all other information is correct. The "last name" is a required field on the I-20 and must match with your documents.

You should present enough ties to your home country, (i.e. letter to continue employment upon your return, documentation of economic, social and/or family ties to homeland, etc)
